My friend Chris--and her jewelry

Chris and I met at a writer's weekend a few years ago. We liked each other's writing, talked at breaks, and started a friendship.

She lives in Kerrville with her husband, Ron--and they often enjoy a month or two away in their RV, one of their favorite second homes being Baja, Mexico.

Chris is a naturalist, a horsewoman, a retired English teacher, a mother, and a writer.   In the last year, she and Ron have begun a new venture--making beautiful jewelry together. Ron makes unique sterling silver and copper pendents, then Chris creates necklaces out of tigers eyes, turquoise, jasper, etched glass, fluorite, and mother-of-pearl.

They don't sell these pieces, but they do let them go--to silent auctions for charities, and to people who want to contribute to a charity in exchange for them.

The "cost" of my new pieces (a necklace and earring set) was a donation to Literacy and Families Inc.

Another charity to which they contribute is for equine rescue.

Chris walks, rides her bike and loves riding a mule named Gus--as well as her horse.

After visiting at my house all morning, we went to Supper at The Emma for lunch--delicious salmon sandwiches and gnudi--then to Jane Bishop's shop--Mockingbird at the Blue Star.

If you'd like a beautiful piece of jewelry in exchange for a charitable contribution, Chris' address is whiteoakcreekoriginals@gmail.com
