Conversation with a Boy

As we were walking to "the park"--the Cambridge Elementary playground--Elena and Makken were having a conversation about their future plans.

"I'm going to be a runner, a chef and a photographer," Makken said.

"And you, Elena? What do you want to be?" I asked.

"A veterinarian," she said.

"Oh, I'm going to take photographer off my list and put veterinarian, too," Makken said.

Later, he took chef off and substituted cat scientist, which--as I found out later, at the patio glue party--is probably an idea he got from Sebastien because that, it turns out, is Sebastien's career plan.

As we were gluing and peeling paint this afternoon, Sebastien informed Makken that he can't be all three; he has to choose--but I'm thinking he has a decade or two to finalize his list.

Elena and Makken both talk at once, rarely asking each other questions, but announcing things to each other.  This is how a six year old girl talks to a boy and vice versa.  They walked the six blocks eating  raw kale and chard I'd planted in the yard and commenting on how good it was!  They found treasures everywhere--their eyes always scanning the ground for things any adult would miss.

A bride was posing for bridal photos nearby the treasure
and Elena took this picture.
"She's beautiful!" both kids said.
